Volvo Takes Bold Step Forward: Tesla Superchargers Access Granted for Electric Models
July 05 2023,
Volvo Cars, aiming for full electrification by 2030, has taken a significant leap forward in that direction by becoming the first European automaker to collaborate with Tesla. This breakthrough agreement allows Volvo's electric car owners to access Tesla’s Supercharger network sprawling across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Starting from 2025, upcoming Volvo vehicles will feature the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port, bringing an additional 12,000 fast-charge points into play for Volvo drivers. This number is set to rise with Tesla's Supercharger network expansion.
This development complements existing charging infrastructure accessible to Volvo drivers, addressing a key challenge in sustainable transportation - easy and convenient charging, as emphasized by Volvo Cars CEO, Jim Rowan.
Owners of Volvo's current fully electric models, such as the XC40, C40 Recharge, EX30, and EX90, are expected to tap into the Supercharger network using an adapter by 2024. Future Volvo models with the NACS port will continue compatibility with the Combined Charging System (CCS) via an adapter.
Finally, the Volvo Cars app will enable users in the United States and Canada to locate numerous public charging stations, gain real-time availability information, and pay for charging - simplifying the overall charging experience.
