Volvo XC60 Recharge vs BMW X3 PHEV vs Audi Q5 PHEV: When Luxury and Efficiency Go Hand in Hand

Luxury PHEV SUVs offer comfort, technology and performance just like their all-gas counterparts, but they add the possibility to drive on full electric mode without using a single drop of gas, thus making daily commutes more environmentally friendly.

Some of these PHEVs tend to sacrifice on performance, others on technologies and even space because of bulky batteries. The XC60, however, delivers an efficient package without compromises.

Here, we compare the Volvo XC60 with the BMW X3 PHEV and Audi Q5 TSFI e.

If you’re looking for performance, the XC60 is the right choice

Under the hood of the 2022 Volvo XC60, you will find the powerful T8 powertrain which is composed of a four-cylinder, 2.0 L turbocharged and supercharged engine connected to a powerful electric motor and a high output battery. This powertrain produces 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission channels the power to the four wheels.

The BMW X3 PHEV also uses a four-cylinder mated to an electric motor, but the output created is much lower when compared to the XC60 Recharge. With only 288 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, the X3 PHEV can’t compete

The Audi Q5 TFSI e also uses a similar setup. Although it outputs higher than the X3, the performance levels max out at 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Also, the Q5 TFSI e uses a less precise 7-speed automatic transmission.

Electric range is also an important factor in this segment. And the XC60 doesn’t disappoint with a full 50 kilometres. The Audi Q5 lets you travel only 37 kilometres on electricity and the X3 PHEV is dead last with 27 kilometres.

The 2022 XC60 Recharge is ahead in terms of tech

For 2022, upgrades have been made to the Volvo XC60’s exterior in order to keep it stylish. But engineers also enhanced the radar, camera, and driver-assistance system sensors.

Inside, the XC60 gets upgraded an upgraded Android-based infotainment system. This new system interface comes with a voice assistant, unlimited personalization options, and best-in-class navigation via Google Maps and a series of in-car apps.
